What to look for when plant arrives
LOLER says lifting equipment that comes from another business mustn’t be used unless it’s accompanied by physical evidence that its last thorough examination has been carried out (regulation 9(4)). That covers anything used for lifting, from telehandlers and lorry loaders to cranes and the chains and slings used with them. On site, thorough examinations are normally due at least every 6 months for accessories and equipment that lifts people, and every 12 months for other lifting equipment, unless an examination scheme sets different intervals.
Excavators need a LOLER thorough examination if they’re used for lifting, even occasionally. Used only for earth-moving, they come under PUWER instead, with inspections at intervals set by a competent person.
Other plant may need PUWER inspection records, depending on how it’s installed and the conditions it works in, and PUWER also requires evidence of the last inspection to come with equipment from another business (regulation 6(4)). Your site rules may also ask for service records or insurance.
